Domestic Installer (Option 2)

Course Duration

  • 16 days centre based training including examinations and assessments

 

Who is this qualification for?

  • For adults over 18 years of age with no previous electrical installation experience

 

Why take this course?

This course provides the knowledge, skills and qualifications to:

  • Install non-notifiable electrical circuits and equipment in houses and other types of domestic properties

 

  • Install and certificate notifiable electrical work that is subject to local authority building control requirements which will take into account your competence and qualifications

 

  • Apply to register on a Domestic Installer Scheme (e.g. ELECSA, NAPIT etc.) to certificate and sign off your own notifiable electrical work installed in a domestic environment without the need to apply for local authority building control

 

  • Inspect, test and certificate electrical equipment (PAT)

 

  • Increase your chances of employment opportunities within the electrical industry

 

Please note

  • On completion of this training programme, we highly recommend that new entrants to the industry work alongside a  registered domestic installer or a qualified electrician for a suitable period of time to gain further on-site experience

 

  •  Please be aware when applying for registration on a domestic installer scheme that your chosen scheme provider may require you to prove that you have sufficient experience of installing in the real world!

 

  • Changes in legislation may affect the entry requirements to a recognised scheme as a 'Registered Domestic Installer'. Therefore, we highly recommend that you check, and confirm, the current entry requirements of the 'Registered Domestic Installer Scheme' providers before booking your chosen training course

What recognised qualifications does this course provide?

This package includes three fully accredited industry standard qualifications as follows:

 

  • EAL Level 3 Award in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings

  • EAL Level 3 Award in Requirements for Electrical Installation BS7671: June 2008 (2015) (QCF)

  • EAL Level 2 Award in  Fundemental Inspection, Testing and Initial verification

 

What does this course cover?

This course includes 9 days in our training classroom and workshop to develop the essential domestic electrical installation knowledge and practical skills applicable to:

 

  • Electrical safety (including safe isolation procedures

  • Cables

  • Lighting circuits

  • Power circuits

  • Smoke alarms

  • Data sockets

  • Isolators

  • Consumer units (including circuit breakers and residual current devices)

  • Basic circuit test procedures

  • Relevant theory and requirements of the current Building Regulations

 

3-days in our training classroom to develop the knowledge required to navigate and understand the requirements of the latest IET 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations  BS7671 including:

 

  • Part 1 – Scope, object and fundamental principles

  • Part 2 – Definitions

  • Part 3 – Assessment of general characteristics

  • Part 4 – Protection for safety

  • Part 5 – Selection and erection of equipment

  • Part 6 – Inspection and testing

  • Part 7 – Special installations or locations

  • Appendices 1 to 16

 

1-day in our training classroom to develop the knowledge and understanding of the relevant aspects of the IET Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations including:

 

  • The key parts of Sections 1 - 8 which augments Approved Document P

  • Section 10 which outlines Parts A, B, C, E, F, L and M

  • Sections 11 and 13

 

2-days in our training classroom and workshop to develop the knowledge and practical skills required for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment (PAT testing) including:

 

  • Statutory and non-statutory requirements

  • Electrical units

  • Equipment construction

  • Inspection and testing theory

  • Practical inspection and testing of equipment

  • Completion and management of documentation

  • The requirements of the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment 4th Edition

  • Additional 1-day attendance at our training centre is required for examination and assessment purposes

 

How is the qualification assessed?

  • 3 x on-line multiple choice examinations

  • 1 x practical competence assessment (PAT)
