What is this training package?

This flexible study and training package has been specifically designed for those who are new to the world of electrics.

 

This package provides the first step towards becoming a 'Qualified Supervisor' responsible for installing, testing and ensuring compliance of electrical installations in dwellings and the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge, understanding of applicable regulations, practical skills required for the safe installation, inspection, testing and certification of electrical equipment and circuits within domestic environments.

 

No previous experience of domestic electrical installations?

No problem, this training package has been designed for people just like you and will develop your knowledge and practical skills on a step by step basis.

 

What does this training package include?

This package includes three fully accredited qualifications as follows:

 

  • EAL Level 2 Award in  Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial verification

  • EAL Level 3 Award in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings

  • EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018

 

It includes the development of essential domestic electrical installation knowledge and practical skills applicable to:

  • Electrical safety (including safe isolation procedures)

  • Cables

  • Lighting circuits

  • Power circuits

  • Smoke alarms

  • Data sockets

  • Isolators

  • Consumer units (including circuit breakers and residual current devices)

  • Basic circuit test procedures

  • Relevant theory and requirements of the current Building Regulations

 

You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of the relevant aspects of the IET Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations including:

  • The key parts of Sections 1 - 8 which augments Approved Document P

  • Section 10 which outlines Parts A, B, C, E, F, L and M

  • Sections 11 and 13

 

 

 

You will also develop the knowledge required to navigate and understand the requirements of the latest IET 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations BS7671 including:

  • Part 1 – Scope, object and fundamental principles

  • Part 2 – Definitions

  • Part 3 – Assessment of general characteristics

  • Part 4 – Protection for safety

  • Part 5 – Selection and erection of equipment

  • Part 6 – Inspection and testing

  • Part 7 – Special installations or locations

  • Appendices 1 to 17

 

 

In addition, you will develop the fundemental knowledge and skills to inspect and test new domestic electrical installations including:

  • Preparation for initial inspection and testing

  • Electrical hazards and safety

  • Safe isolation procedures and equipment

  • Correct use of test Instruments

  • Basic protection measures

  • Fault protection measures

  • Additional protection measures

  • SELV

  • Inspection requirements

  • Special installations and locations

  • IP codes

  • Sequence of tests

  • Continuity of protective conductors

  • Continuity of ring final conductors

  • Insulation resistance

  • Polarity

  • Earth electrodes

  • Earth fault loop impedance

  • Prospective fault current

  • Residual current devices (RCD)

  • Verification of voltage drop

  • Documentation

 

In simple terms, the above qualifications will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to comply with the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, the Building Regulations and to inspect and test  a new domestic installation together with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills to safely install electrical equipment and circuits within domestic premises.

Please note - Following changes in qualification requirements, from the 1st September 2021 the above activities may only be performed at this stage of training while supervised by suitably qualified skilled person.

 

How will you study?

You will immediately commence your studies on the EAL Level 3 Award in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings qualification and then commence the development of your practical installation skills in our training workshop.

 

You will continue the development of your practical installation skills in our training workshop and, following successful achievement of the Building Regulations qualification, progress to your studies on to the EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018 qualification (more commonly known as the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations).

 

Finally, following successfull achievement of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations qualification, you will commence your studies on the EAL Level 2 Award in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial verification qualification together with the development of your inspection and testing practical skills in our training workshop.

 

We understand how difficult it can be to commit to a course that requires attendance at a training centre or college on fixed dates and times, therefore we offer a more flexible approach to training for those of you who have busy lifestyles or simply cannot take time off from work.

 

This package provides the opportunity for you to study on any device (mobile phone, tablet or PC), anywhere at any time using our professional e-learning platforms, directed and supported by a dedicated personal tutor blended with traditional course book study.

 

The development of your practical installation skills together with your inspection and testing skills will require you to attend our training centre for 6 days and 8 mornings or 9 days and 2 mornings, typically this would be delivered over a 14-20 week period but we offer this on a very flexible basis with attendance being programmed at mutually agreed times.

 

You will also be required to attend our centre for on-line examinations and assessments, once again these will be planned to take place at mutually agreed times.

 

No quiet time at home or elsewhere to study?

No problem, this training package allows you to use our training centre facilities to study in peace and quiet when you want and for however long you want, all we ask is that you contact us at least 24 hours in advance of your intention to study in the centre to make sure we have enough space for you, rarely a problem but we wouldn’t want to cause you any inconvenience.

 

This innovative, flexible approach to learning provides you with the added benefit of having an expert member of staff on hand to direct and support your studies if needed at no extra cost.

 

Please note

In-centre study facilities are available Monday to Friday between 10am and 3pm. Alternative times may be available subject to operational demands at the training centre, simply call us and ask if you would like to come into the centre at a different time!

 

What do you need to provide for this training?

We provide the necessary tools, test equipment and professional course books but you will need to provide safety shoes or boots, calculator, writing materials and copies of the:

 

  • IET 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations BS7671:2018 (18th Edition blue cover version)

  • IET 'On-Site Guide' BS7671:2018 (18th Edition blue cover version)

  • IET Electrician’s Guide to the Building Regulations (18th Edition blue band version)

  • IET Inspection and Testing Guidance Note 3 (18th Edition blue band version)
